Ciaran has a special interest in the treatment of sports-related knee injuries, especially ACL rupture and meniscal injury. He also enjoys using technology to improve patient outcomes, such as the use of navigation in total knee replacement surgery.

Ciaran consults at the Royston Centre in Hastings, and operates at both Royston Hospital and the Royston Day Surgical Unit. He also holds a consultant position at Hastings Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital, where he provides ongoing care to people in the public sector.

Ciaran is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, a member of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, the New Zealand Knee and Sports Surgical Society and the Paediatric Orthopaedic Society of New Zealand. He has published research articles and book chapters on the topics of ligamentous knee, cartilage and trauma injuries. He maintains an active interest and involvement in training of junior doctors.

Ciaran Thrush grew up in Hawkes Bay before attending medical school at Auckland University. After graduation, he returned to Hawkes Bay and went on to train as an orthopaedic surgeon in many centres around New Zealand.

After completing his orthopaedic specialist training, Ciaran spent three years gaining further subspecialty training in Melbourne, Australia. In Melbourne, Ciaran learnt up to date techniques in the treatment of sports knee injuries, hip and knee replacement and the treatment of complex trauma. After gaining this experience,

Ciaran returned to Hawkes Bay to bring these techniques home to help our community.
